How to "hack" your circle of influence for maximum growth.

Accelerate your growth by hacking your circle of influence [My Personal Board of Advisors System]

We’re just about to kick off day 3 of our Founder OS Mastermind live event.

It’s been an awesome time so far.

The venue is breathtaking, and there have already been some actionable takeaways as well as some incredible value shared by attendees.

(In a few weeks I’ll be releasing a YouTube video with some of the biggest moments and takeaways from the event, so make sure you keep an eye out.)

Here's a pic from our first night together

One of my favorite parts of the weekend is seeing how much everyone is enjoying getting to connect with one another.

Being a founder can feel isolating, and I think it’s extremely important we prioritize connecting with other entrepreneurs.

This is important not only for our emotional and mental well-being, but also because it can help accelerate the growth of your brand.

A study done by a psychologist at Harvard found that the people you habitually associate with determine as much as 95% of your success or failure in life.

That’s a pretty big impact, and not really something I want to leave to chance...

Which is why I decided to create my own Personal Board of Advisors.

So regardless of what's happening in my life, I have a community that's helping me improve and level up.

And while the members have changed a few times over the years, they've all been major contributors to my success.

In today’s newsletter, I’m going to share how you can build out your own Personal Board of Advisors.

Take what I share with you to hack your circle of influence and accelerate your growth.

Introducing: Community OS

  • Do you know what brands like Red Bull, Apple, and lululemon have in common?
  • They obsess over creating a community
  • Want to create your own die-hard community of raving fans? Then you need to check out Community OS

#1 - Types of board members

When choosing my board members, I consider a few things in my decision.

First, there are 3 different types of people I want on my board - experts, peers, and mentors.

  • Mentors - People whose outcomes you want
  • Experts - Specialists in their field
  • Peers - Fellow founders who have your back

This gives me both lateral support (peers) and upward support (experts and mentors).

Mentors are often only available during set times, and they're the people I can go to when I need advice based on experience that I don't have.

Experts are highly specialized in particular areas, and I go to them for specific insights or advice pertaining to those areas.

Peers tend to provide more day-in and day-out encouragement and “in-the-trenches” support.

I have a handful of peers that I chat with weekly and I value those connections a lot.

#2 - Selecting your members

Selecting the members for your Personal Board of Advisors is more than just choosing talented or experienced people.

One of the most important factors when deciding who I want on my board is considering who the members are as people.

  • Are they willing to tell me harsh truths?
  • Do they have my best interest at heart?
  • Are they living a life I aspire to have someday?

These people are going to be a major influence in my life.

However, if they aren't willing to share hard truths - even ones I might not want to hear - I won't truly grow.

Alignment in lifestyle is also something I consider...

I want them to live out values that are important to me.

#3 - Diversify your board

Finally, just like the board at public companies, I want each member of my board to help me level up in a specific area.

Otherwise it just becomes an echo chamber or my skills don’t develop equally.

I recommend you map out your key growth areas for the next 6-12 months and then figure out who you need to include to help you level up in those specific ways.

Some of my current Personal Board of Advisors members include:

  • A Youtube growth specialist
  • Copywriting/marketing experts
  • My therapist
  • 8 & 9-figure SaaS founders
  • Sales experts

#4 - Reach out

After you have your dream members picked, it’s time to start reaching out.

The most important thing to keep in mind is to communicate in a way that respects the other person’s time and energy.

You may need to pay for the privilege of connecting with the person, or you might offer an “experience swap” where you help them with something you’ve excelled at in exchange for some of their time.

Here’s an outreach template you can use:

“Hey name,

I’m a massive fan of your content and I’ve learned a ton from you over the years.

I recently loved your recent post on ____. I implemented it and it changed the trajectory of my business. (I’m currently building __.)

I’d love to jam to find out if there's a way to create a mutually beneficial collaboration.

Curious if you have 10 minutes to chat on [day] at [time].”

Not everyone you reach out to will be interested in connecting, and that’s ok.

Just keep reaching out until you have all the spots you want filled.

Also, one final thought...

Your board needs to be dynamic.

Your initial picks won’t always be the best fit, and over time you may find that your needs change, leading you to swap out members.

There you have it, my Personal Board of Advisors System.

I hope you found that helpful.

If you don’t already have your own board, I encourage you to set aside some time this week to begin building it out.

Once you do - hit me up on Twitter with what you came up with. (Feel free to share a screenshot and tag me!)

Let's win together 🥇
